Volcom Short Documentary “The Last Orangutans” wins Best Environmental Short at the Miami Short Film Festival
Los Angeles, CA – March 10, 2013 – M.Samuels Media and Volcom are proud to announce that their environmental documentary on the plight of the near extinct orangutans has won “Best Environmental” at the Miami Short Film Festival. The documentary, shot over the course of four days, highlights the disparity between the conservation efforts and the illegal logging and industrial practices currently ravaging the virgin Indonesian forest.
The Miami Short Film Festival, in it’s eighth year, compiled over 800 films in qualifying for seventy final selections for premiere at the internationally renown festival. With stiff competition, The Last Orangutans prevailed by telling a story that compelled the audience to examine the causes of rainforest destruction occurring in Indonesia and the effects the average citizen has on the impending extinction of these beautiful animals.
The film was made possible due to Volcom’s partnership with the Sumatran Orangutan Society (SOS) and the Volcomunity product collaboration that donated 5% of it’s sales back to SOS. Mark Samuels, the director and editor of the film, spent four days deep in the Indonesian jungle documenting the orangutans in their wild habitat as well as interviewing park staff and government officials about the causes and solutions to rainforest destruction.
