Carbon Champion Privacy Policy

Introduction
MSamuels Media Inc. (“we,” “us,” or “our”) operates the Carbon Champion mobile application and web application (the “App”). This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and protect your personal information when you use our App.
By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with the terms of this Privacy Policy, please do not use the App.
Information We Collect
Account Information — When you create an account, we collect your email address and display name. If you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive the basic profile information those services provide (name, email address). We do not receive or store your Google or Apple password.
Carbon Footprint Data — The App collects data you provide about your daily activities, including transportation habits, dietary choices, energy usage, household information, and purchase activity. This data is used to calculate and track your personal carbon footprint.
Onboarding Preferences — During setup, you provide information such as your city, vehicle type, commute method, diet, home type, household size, HVAC settings, square footage, and whether you have solar panels. This information is used to estimate your baseline carbon footprint.
Usage Data — We collect analytics data about how you interact with the App, including screens viewed, features used, and general usage patterns. This data is collected through Firebase Analytics and is used to improve the App experience.
Device Information — We may collect information about the device you use to access the App, including device type, operating system version, and unique device identifiers, solely for the purpose of app functionality and crash reporting.
Receipt and Image Data — If you use the receipt scanning feature, images are processed for optical character recognition (OCR) to extract purchase information. Images are processed locally on your device or through secure cloud processing and are not stored on our servers after processing.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect for the following purposes:
To provide, maintain, and improve the App and its features, including calculating your carbon footprint, generating personalized insights, and offering recommendations to reduce your environmental impact.
To authenticate your identity and maintain your account security.
To sync your data across devices so your carbon tracking history is available wherever you sign in.
To provide personalized tips and insights based on your carbon footprint data.
To analyze usage trends and improve the App experience through anonymized, aggregated analytics.
To diagnose technical issues and fix bugs through crash reporting.
To send you optional notifications about your carbon tracking progress, challenges, and sustainability news (you can opt out at any time).
To process in-app purchases and manage your subscription status.
Third-Party Services
The App uses the following third-party services that may collect information:
Firebase (Google LLC) — We use Firebase for authentication, cloud database storage, analytics, crash reporting, and cloud functions. Firebase may collect device identifiers, IP addresses, and usage data. Firebase’s privacy policy is available at https://firebase.google.com/support/privacy.
RevenueCat — We use RevenueCat to manage in-app subscriptions and purchases. RevenueCat processes transaction data provided by Apple’s App Store. RevenueCat’s privacy policy is available at https://www.revenuecat.com/privacy.
NewsAPI — We use NewsAPI to fetch carbon and climate-related news articles displayed in the App. No personal user data is shared with NewsAPI.
Apple Health (HealthKit) — If you grant permission, the App may read health and activity data (such as step counts and cycling distances) from Apple Health to automatically estimate carbon savings from active transportation. We do not write data to Apple Health. Health data is processed locally and is never shared with third parties or used for advertising. You can revoke this access at any time through your device settings.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored in Firebase Cloud Firestore, hosted in the United States (us-west1 region). We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information, including:
Firestore security rules that ensure users can only access their own data.
Encrypted data transmission using HTTPS/TLS.
Firebase Authentication for secure access control.
No storage of passwords — authentication is handled securely by Firebase and third-party identity providers (Google, Apple).
While we take reasonable measures to protect your data, no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
Data Retention
We retain your personal information and carbon tracking data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete your personal data from our servers within 30 days. Anonymized, aggregated data that cannot be used to identify you may be retained for analytics purposes.
Your Rights and Choices
Access and Export — You can view all of your carbon tracking data within the App at any time.
Correction — You can update your profile information, preferences, and carbon entries at any time through the App.
Deletion — You can request deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us at hello@msamuelsmedia.com. We will process deletion requests within 30 days.
Opt-Out of Analytics — You can disable analytics data collection through your device settings.
Notifications — You can opt out of push notifications at any time through your device settings.
HealthKit Permissions — You can revoke Apple Health access at any time through Settings > Privacy & Security > Health on your device.
Children’s Privacy
The App is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected personal information from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information promptly. California Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident, you have the right to request information about the categories of personal information we collect, the purposes for which we use it, and any third parties with whom we share it. We do not sell personal information to third parties. We do not use personal information for targeted advertising.
International Users
The App is primarily designed for users in the United States. If you access the App from outside the United States, please be aware that your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States where our servers are located. By using the App, you consent to this transfer.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by posting the new Privacy Policy within the App and updating the “Effective Date” at the top of this page. We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically. Your continued use of the App after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
